A Memorial Day weekend tradition continues in Danville with the annual Rotary Memorial Way along North Vermilion Street. Bill Pickett has the story…
Audio PlayerMembers of the Danville Rotary Club were out early Friday placing hundreds of small American Flags along the route.
Tonya Hill, president of the Noon Rotary Club, noted the weather was cooperating beautifully….
{AUDIO: “Absolutely gorgeous! You couldn’t ask for a better day. And the ground’s soft from all the lovely rain that we’ve received, so it’s making it easier for us to poke the holes and put the flags in.”}
Hill was asked how the proceeds from the flag sales are used…
Audio Player{AUDIO: “The money raised from this Memorial Way project goes to the War Museum, the Sparky Songer scholarship which we give out at DACC, goes to the VA, and then it goes to the Legion – Post 210.}
Hill added citizens have been great in their support of Rotary Memorial Way for 26 years….
{AUDIO: “We couldn’t do this without the donations from the community and people buying these flags in memory or honor of someone. It’s truly appreciated, and with Rotary we give back to our community. It doesn’t go outside the community. It stays right here to benefit the people that live in Vermilion County.”}
In addition to the hundreds of flags lining North Vermilion Street this holiday weekend, flags are also placed at local war memorials and the Vermilion County War Museum.
