Audio PlayerThe donor wishes to remain anonymous according to Danville Police Chief Christopher Yates. He says the donor wants the gift to be used to replace the classroom building at Friendly Town in Danville’s Lincoln Park.
This year’s classes begin on June 9th, but Chief Yates says the new building should be ready when Friendly Town classes start next summer.
Friendly Town is where children currently enrolled in the first, second and third grades learn about pedestrian and bicycle safety, fire safety, stranger danger, cyber safety, and bullying. They also learn about calling 9-1-1 and how to interact with first responders.
Although the new classroom building would not be ready for use until next year, Chief Yates notes there is another new building in Friendly Town this year. OSF partnered with Friendly Town to place a small hospital in the town. And volunteers recently worked to improve other parts of the safety education facility at Lincoln Park.
Danville City Council members are also expected to vote Tuesday, June 3rd, on a proposed ordinance regulating public camping within the city limits. The vote follows recent action to remove some homeless people who were camping in the area of Ellsworth Park.
