THE FOLLOWING IS A NEWS-GAZETTE STORY BY JENNIFER BAILEY
POTOMAC — Sixteen-year-old Aleyah Carley, who was diagnosed with leukemia two years ago, is not one to be the center of attention.
But today is different. As she prepares for her Make-A-Wish sendoff celebration before heading to Hawaii, Aleyah and her family want to make time to thank the community for all its support and generosity.
They’ll get their chance at today’s 4 p.m. luau-themed party at Potomac Grade School, before taking off for Oahu.
“It will be nice getaway,” said mom Theresa, who’ll join husband Jim, Aleyah and Aleyah’s siblings, Rylan and Baylor, on the trip, made possible by wish granters like Corey Schieler of Normal and Heather McArty of Oakwood, according to Make-A-Wish Illinois.
Aleyah, who’ll be a junior this fall at Armstrong Township High School, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a blood cancer, in December 2022 and had a bone-marrow transplant in May 2023.
