THE FOLLOWING IS A VERMILION COUNTY STATE’S ATTORNEY’S OFFICE RELEASE
People v. KeShawn Stapleton 2023-CF-657
On June 9, 2025, KeShawn Stapleton (DOB: 5/30/2002), formerly of Danville, Illinois, pleaded guilty to Aggravated Robbery, a class 1 felony and was sentenced to 9 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Following his term of imprisonment, Stapleton will serve one year of mandatory supervised release. The plea and sentencing hearing were presided over by Judge Karen Wall.
The People presented evidence that on October 26, 2023, a Danville resident in the area of Lewis Street was walking to the trash dumpster around 9:40 A.M. when he was surrounded by five black males. The suspects held the victim at gunpoint and stole the victim’s backpack, which contained an Xbox, the victim’s cell phone and took the victim’s shoes from his feet. The crime was captured on a security camera. As the victim was providing descriptions to detectives with the Danville Police Department, there was a call regarding robbery suspects running towards Moore Street. Police responded to the area and observed several black males exiting a red Ford sedan in front of a residence on Moore Street. One of the males was identified as KeShawn Stapleton and the clothing he was wearing at the time of police contact matched the clothing he was wearing during the crime that was captured on video. KeShawn Stapleton was identified in the surveillance video of the robbery removing the victim’s shoes from his feet. The vehicle was searched and the victim’s shoes and cell phone were located inside the vehicle. Co-defendant Alvin Daniels was sentenced to 5 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on February 5, 2025. Another co-defendant, a minor, has been charged.
State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy said, “I commend the Danville Police Department for quickly identifying and apprehending these violent offenders. We are grateful to the victim for coming forward. Armed robbery is a dangerous crime that threatens the safety of our entire community. My office remains committed to working with the police to pursue justice and protect victims of violent crime.”
