DANVILLE – When the Quaker Oats plant in Danville shut down, many longtime employees were left wondering what came next. For Gerardo “Chico” Rangel, it was more than just the end of a job—it was the spark that launched a bold new chapter.
After 25 years of loyal service, Chico could have stepped back. Instead, he stepped up.
With the help of Vermilion County Works and its outplacement services, Chico enrolled in the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) certificate program at Danville Area Community College. He didn’t waste a moment. From the start, Chico brought energy, discipline, and a deep commitment to learning. Whether he was in the classroom or in the lab, Chico gave it his all—and it paid off.
But Chico didn’t stop at earning a certificate. He had a bigger dream in mind.
As the owner of a small construction business, Rangel Development & Solutions, Chico had already built a solid foundation in home repairs and general contracting. Now, with new HVAC skills under his belt, he saw the chance to grow his business into something more. He envisioned a one-stop shop for both construction and heating and cooling services—a smart move that would set him apart in a competitive industry.
That vision became reality with the launch of TruHome Heating and Air. Today, Chico is not only running a thriving business, he’s also creating jobs, mentoring young workers, and making a real impact in the community he calls home.
TruHome now employs eight team members and has welcomed a high school apprentice from Terre Haute—proof of Chico’s belief in paying it forward. He’s passionate about giving others the kind of opportunity he received and about building a team that shares his values: hard work, quality craftsmanship, and pride in every project.
And Chico’s not done yet. This summer, he returned to DACC once again—this time as a student in the Construction Program, made possible through the Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship initiative. He’s always learning, always growing, and always looking for the next way to improve his skills and his business.
The faculty and staff at DACC’s Technology Center are proud to have played a part in Chico’s story. They’ve seen firsthand how his drive and positivity can lift up everyone around him. While he may no longer be in the classroom every day, Chico remains a vital part of the DACC community—offering guidance, encouragement, and partnership to future students.
Gerardo “Chico” Rangel turned a challenge into an opportunity—and then into a triumph. His journey is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to start something new, follow a dream, and build something lasting. He’s a shining example of resilience, leadership, and what’s possible when you choose to rise.
