DANVILLE — In the wake of a shooting in Winter Park that left a recent Danville High School graduate dead, Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. said the city has made installing video cameras in city parks “literally our top priority.”
Williams told aldermen at Tuesday night’s meeting of the city council’s public services committee meeting that he, police Chief Chris Yates, public works Director Dave Ruwe and Chief Technology Officer Agnel D’Silva have met several times, formulated cost estimates and are looking at getting installation times for the technology they need.
City officials have discussed putting video cameras in city parks due to vandalism and other criminal incidents through the years. The discussion took on new urgency with the death of 18-year-old Aniyah Davis over the weekend in a shooting at a “pop-up party” in Winter Park.
