Thursday, July 17th will be the fifth anniversary of the passing of Georgia’s Fifth District Congressman John Lewis. Lewis served in the U.S. House for 17 straight terms starting with his election in 1986; and was also known for his involvement in the Bloody Sunday incident in Selma, Alabama when he was 25.
Numerous events are scheduled nationwide on the 17th, under the name of “Good Trouble Lives On.” One of them is scheduled for the southeast corner of Gilbert and Main Streets in Danville. DeeAnn Ryan, one of the organizers for Indivisibles Vermilion County and their declared “Hands Off” and “No Kings” protests earlier this year; says that’s what John Lewis was known for saying during his nearly 35 years in Congress; “Let’s make some good trouble.” Ryan added that the goal at Gilbert and Main on the 17th is going to be “Make Good Noise;” and she says that’s exactly what Lewis would be doing today with what’s happening in Washington.

Audio PlayerAUDIO: He was really a brave person in the Civil Rights movement, and probably responsible for a lot of the reform. We know that he was and would be more appalled by everything that’s happening right now. So we want to do this in his honor, to carry on his tradition.
The scheduled hours for the Thursday, July 17th protest are 5 to 7 PM; on the sidewalks of the southeast corner of Gilbert and Main; in the area around the Danville Victory Monument.
