Dangerously hot and humid conditions invading our area this week will also increase the risk for heat related illnesses.
An Excessive Heat Watch was issued Monday for our area by the National Weather Service. It covers portions of central, east central, and southeast Illinois. The advisory covers the period from Wednesday morning through Thursday evening.
Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events. The combination of temperatures with the humidity levels will make it feel as hot as 105 to 115 degrees.
Hot weather can be particularly dangerous for children and older citizens. Remember to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioning if possible, stay out of the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors.
Also remember to never leave children or pets in an unattended vehicle. The interior of a vehicle can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
