DANVILLE — With the 11th annual American Legion State Golf Tournament coming up this weekend, Aug. 2-3, we thought we’d check in with Rhonda Ellis with the Danville Area Visitors Bureau and ask her 5 questions to find out what this event is all about. Ellis has been with the bureau for 11 years as marketing specialist and has recently taken on the role of interim executive director, effective July 1, when Jeanie Cooke retired.
The two-day event is hosted by the city of Danville and American Legion Post 210. It takes place at Harrison Park Golf Course and Turtle Run Golf Club. Golfers from across the state will compete in a four-person scramble at 9 a.m. Saturday and switch courses on Sunday with a Shotgun starting at 9 a.m. Entry fee included both golf rounds, cart fees, a tee prize, Saturday Night Dinner at the Post 210 Legion and prize money.
Opening Ceremonies: 8 a.m. Saturday at Harrison Park Golf Club. The American Legion Riders will be present and there will be a presentation of colors, and the National Anthem. The Danville American Legion Post 210 Honor Guard and other area Post Honor Guards will present the colors and there will be a fly-over.
Proceeds benefit local veterans’ programs and youth initiatives.
“This tournament is more than just a game,” says Bob Balla, Commander at Legion Post 210. “It’s a celebration of service, sportsmanship and community. We’re proud to host it here in Danville, where the spirit of the Legion and the love of golf come together.”
Five Questions with Ellis:
1. What is this event and its purpose? The American Legion State Golf Tournament hosted in Danville represents the American Legion Department of Illinois and raises money for local/state veteran charities.
