THE FOLLOWING IS A DANVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT RELEASE
The Danville Police Department is issuing a Scam Alert to inform residents about ongoing scams targeting members of our community. Criminals are using phone calls, emails, text messages, and even social media to impersonate government agencies, businesses, and law enforcement.
• Police Impersonation Calls: Scammers pretend to be officers, threatening arrest unless fines are paid immediately via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.
• Utility Scam Calls: Fraudsters claim your power or water will be shut off unless immediate payment is made.
• Package Delivery Texts/Emails: Fake tracking links claiming to be from UPS, FedEx, or USPS that steal personal information.
• Tech Support Scams: Victims are told their computer or phone is compromised and are tricked into giving remote access or making payments.
• Grandparent Scams: Seniors are targeted with urgent calls pretending their grandchild is in trouble and needs money fast.
• Never provide personal or financial information over the phone unless you initiated the call.
• Do not trust caller ID — scammers can “spoof” official phone numbers.
• Hang up and call the organization directly using a verified number.
• Avoid paying with gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency — these are red flags for fraud.
If you believe you’ve been targeted or have fallen victim to a scam, please contact the Danville Police Department at (217)-431-2250.
