With August 7th being the final day of World Breastfeeding Week, the Vermilion County Health Department had a team of vendors and organizations out in the parking lot all afternoon with important information. Health Department WIC Nutritionist and Certified Lactation Specialist Taylor Beitz says breast milk can be so beneficial to the health of a baby that it’s often simply called “liquid gold.”
AUDIO: Breast milk is labeled as “liquid gold” because it’s just so nutritious for Baby. It’s got like all of the necessary vitamins and minerals; and protein needs, carbohydrate needs, all the things specifically for Baby.

And the fact is, Beitz continued, breastfeeding is absolute gold for the mother’s health as well.
AUDIO: Breastfeeding decreases your chance of like Heart Disease, and Type 2 Diabetes, and things like that. There’s a whole list of benefits for a mom breastfeeding as well.
Beitz says Vermilion County’s WIC program is there to offer assistance when it comes to breastfeeding issues. She says every mother and baby are different.
AUDIO: Some moms are a pro. They just need reassurance that they’re doing everything well. Here at WIC we always promote that even if they’re struggling, they’re always doing the best job that they can.
The WIC program; Women, Infants, and Children; serves mothers with children up to their fifth birthday. For information on Vermilion County’s program; call 217-431-2662, option 1. World Breastfeeding week is held August 1st through 7th each year.
