DANVILLE — This weekend marks the fourth anniversary of the last time Danville native Jelani Day was seen alive by those who knew him.
In observance of that anniversary, the 3rd Annual Jelani Day Gala will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Red Door Meeting Place, in the Broadview neighborhood of Chicago.
It’s a fundraiser for the Jelani Day Foundation, set up by Mr. Day’s mother, Carmen Bolden Day, after her son’s body was eventually found in the Illinois River near Peru.
“This month is really not a good month, but the foundation is keeping me busy,” Bolden Day said.
Mr. Day, then a 25-year-old Illinois State University graduate student, disappeared on Aug. 24, 2021. His body was found in the river 11 days later — Sept. 4, 2021 — but not positively identified until later in September. According to the LaSalle County coroner, Mr. Day died of drowning.
