A town hall meeting is set for 5 to 6 PM this coming Tuesday, August 26th, at the David S. Palmer Arena. The listed topic is “Anti-Union Worker Tactics” at Viscofan. United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 700 president Tracy Bartak says anti-union attacks have been going on for years.
As examples, Bartak cited the firing of union leadership and stewards at the plant, as well as numerous petitions being started in attempt to weaken and decertify the union.
AUDIO: Despite this, workers have stood together and voted to keep their union every time. Now, Viscofan has turned to more extreme measures; refusing to acknowledge or comply with existing collective bargaining agreements, and even cutting off the workers’ health insurance funding.
Bartak says the community needs to know what’s going on at this local place of employment, and the impact it’s having on workers and families. Schedule speakers Tuesday evening include former Viscofan workers; and scheduled attendees include Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr; State Rep Brandon Schweizer, and the Office of U.S. Rep Robin Kelly. Bartak will serve as host and moderator.
