With Labor Day Weekend having arrived early this year, that means the City of Danville’s FIRST FRIDAYS for the month of September is still to come. And it happens this Friday, September 5th, with a new First Fridays event called “Discover Danville.”
City Community Relations Coordinator Lindsay Franz recently told Tommy B on D102’s The Big Show that this is a golden opportunity to learn more about all of Danville’s people.
AUDIO: Just to celebrate the cultures that we have here in Danville that make this city so unique; and that may not be seen directly otherwise. You can come down and almost travel the world, but right here in Danville and stay here.
Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr mentioned while on The Big Show that he put forth the idea for this new event, after fondly recalling a memory from his school days.
AUDIO: I had never had fresh coconut. I didn’t even know about fresh coconut, really; until probably my 5th grade year. Mrs. Sybil Mervis helped us sponsor, at our school, a kind of around the world taste of culture type thing. And basically, there were people there sharing about their different cultures; and it was so cool to learn about them. And so I thought, there are a lots of people here in Danville that folks don’t know about where they’re from. I just wanted to give everyone the chance to be seen or heard here in Danville.
