ABOVE: The Danville Area Soccer Complex on E. Winter Ave. will be hosting USA Ultimate Frisbee Sectional Championships Sat Sept 6th & Sun Sept 7th.
It was a few weeks ago that CIMG received a press release from Tracey Fentem of the Danville Area Visitor’s Bureau, announcing that the sport of “Ultimate Frisbee” would soon be in Danville, at the Danville Area Soccer Complex on East Winter Avenue.
And now, that weekend has arrived. From Noon into the nighttime hours this Saturday, September 6th; and from 9 AM into the mid-afternoon on Sunday the 7th; the USA Ultimate Sectional Championships will taking place.
Recently on 1490 WDAN’s Saturday Morning Sports Talk, Illinois Ultimate’s Jacob Nuxoll talked about how a creative idea turned into a brand new sport.
AUDIO: Ultimate Frisbee was invented in New Jersey back in the 70s. It was Columbia High School, I believe; it was some guys in a parking lot. What it is today is essentially two opposing teams trying to score in opposite end zones. So, you’re tempted to think it looks like football. But it moves a little more like soccer, and kind of plays like basketball. It’s very fast paced.
It’s a seven-on-seven game, with both men’s and mixed divisions coming to play in Danville. Nuxoll says one important trait of this game is how a frisbee acts so much differently, as opposed to a ball.
AUDIO: One of its most exciting elements, of course, is that a frisbee floats. And so what this creates are some very exciting moments; two players running side by side, racing each other to catch a disc that’s hovering just feet in front of them. Or sometimes it will float in the air, and you’ll see two or more people, high in the air, trying to catch it well overhead. So it’s a very exciting sport.
Nuxoll says a lot of the teams in Danville this weekend will be from the Chicago and Indianapolis areas; but there are also some downstate Illinois teams from around Champaign and Bloomington.
