The manager of the Danville Meijer Store said the business would re-open this evening (Saturday, September 13, 2025) following a hazardous materials incident.

(The Meijer parking lot is mostly empty Saturday afternoon after the store was temporarily closed.)
Danville firefighters found a vapor cloud in a storage area that was being caused by a Freon leak when they arrived on the scene at midafternoon. Because of the leak the building was evacuated and the Danville Fire Department’s Hazardous Response Team was called to handle the situation.
Two members of the team wore protective gear as they entered the building and determined the cloud had dissipated and the area was safe. There were no injuries.

(A member of the Hazardous Materials Team is sprayed after exiting the building.)
Saturdays are normally a busy shopping day at the store but the hazmat incident was not the only thing that interrupted shopping at the Meijer store. Earlier in the day a thunderstorm caused a momentary power outage. It left shoppers in the dark but not for long as emergency lights activated. The power quickly returned to normal but registers had to re-boot. Customers took it in stride, though as heavy rain fell outside. It was the first significant rain in the Danville area this month. In fact, the entire county remains under a burning ban because of drought conditions.
