DANVILLE — Just as the Danville Public Library prepares for a new executive director while planning a second-floor renovation, it’s also preparing staff for potential layoffs.
Danville Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. is seeking to cut the library’s budget by as much as $500,000, by reducing its portion of the property tax levy; the library’s most recent share totaled $2.1 million.
In order to absorb such a funding loss, some of the public library’s estimated 28 full- and part-time employees would have to be let go.
Tax levy discussions are now occurring internally, with public discussions at city council meetings coming in October.
Williams said one of the reasons he’s looking to save money is due to the city wanting to repair or replace fire stations. That comes with an initial $10 million bond issue.
