THE FOLLOWING IS A NEWS-GAZETTE STORY BY JANA WIERSEMA
As construction on one of the final pieces of a nearly 25-mile trail connecting Urbana to Kickapoo State Park is expected to get underway this month, organizers are seeking the community’s help to close a funding gap of a little under $2 million.
This latest 3.6-mile segment of the Kickapoo Rail Trail will connect the existing trail in St. Joseph to the Ogden portion, the Champaign County Forest Preserve District announced Thursday. The trail follows a former CSX railroad right-of-way.
“We’ve seen it as a source of enjoyment, a source of economic value, a source of recreation, transportation — those are all the benefits that we’ve seen so far and we expect to see increase with just more and more connections,” said Sam Ihm, planning director for the forest preserve district.
