Leaders from Danville American Legion Post 210 are calling for the Superintendent of the Vermilion County Veterans Assistance Commission to be replaced. Bill Pickett has the story…
The Post delegate and alternate delegate walked out of a Commission meeting last night (Thursday, November 13th, 2025) after presenting a letter to the Commission from Post Commander Danny Mullins and the Post 210 Executive Board. The letter called for a review of the operation and management of services under the current Superintendent and added the current Superintendent should be replaced.
The move came after more concerns were raised about how some taxpayer dollars are being spent. Commission Superintendent Marti Carroll says a decision to hire an attorney followed a meeting with the chairman of the county board and finance committee chairman….
{AUDIO: “I was informed that while the County was aware that they had no legal authority to dictate the distribution of our budget, they felt that they did have the authority to deny funding. And so, what I was told was that they were considering not funding the Veterans Assistance Commission for 2026.”}
The meeting with the county board leaders came after it was learned earlier that the Veterans Assistance Commission still had hundreds of thousands of dollars that was supposed to have been spent helping veterans.
Lon Henderson, who serves on the county board but said he was speaking as a concerned taxpayer, said he would like to see the agreement to hire the attorney who has been representing the Commission…
{AUDIO: “I would FOI (Freedom of Information) it, however my understanding is that the Superintendent has yet to respond to many of the previous FOIs that they have received. Not only did she not respond, but did not ask for an extension which, potentially, puts us taxpayers on the hook for fines.”}
Henderson called for both Carroll and the chairman of the Commission to be replaced so the organization can meet its goals providing services.
Veterans Assistance Commission member Terry Moore (sitting on right on far side of table) said Carroll had acted without the board’s approval…
{AUDIO: “We’re responsible for you and anything you do. Without the board’s approval, you contracted us into an agreement with an attorney.”}
Carroll was supposed to give the board an update on what financial assistance has been given to support veterans but said she did not have that information.
The next meeting of the Veterans Assistance Commission is scheduled for December 18, 2025, at 6:00 p.m.
