The Vermilion County Handicapped Association has wrapped up this year’s work with the construction of a ramp at a home on Danville’s north side. Association president Glenn Billings says it was the 451st ramp the group has built across the county since the early 1990s. He described the recipient of the latest ramp…
{AUDIO: “It’s for a young kid that’s blind and got down syndrome. They’re trying to help him walk but he needs a wheelchair ramp. We’re in the process of getting him a wheelchair, too.}
There is no cost for those who receive the ramps since all the workers volunteer their time. Billings explained how the money is raised for materials…
{AUDIO: “We have a Harley raffle every year. We try to raise money through that. And then donations from the surrounding area.”}
Billings noted it is not just men who have been building the ramps. One of those who helped build the latest ramp is a woman who lives in Champaign. And Billings says there’s a need for more volunteers….
{AUDIO: “Most of our crew here is in their late fifties to late seventies. We need the younger generation to step up and come and help out. It’s a good thing and you’ll feel good about yourself.”}
Although no additional ramps will be built this year, applications are now being accepted for next year. If anyone in the county needs a ramp built at their home, simply contact the Vermilion County Handicapped Association.
