DANVILLE — A week after the lone Democrat Vermilion County sheriff candidate had his name removed from the 2026 ballot over a training certificate qualifying him to serve, he’s asking for a court review of the decision.
Hugh Sands said his attorney on Monday filed a petition for judicial review in Vermilion County Circuit Court against Jerry Hawker who objected to his election petition.
According to Vermilion County Clerk Robyn Heffern, Sands had five business days after the electoral board’s decision to file a judicial review petition.
The county’s electoral board, comprised of Heffern, State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy and Circuit Clerk Melissa Quick, voted to sustain an objection by Republican Vermilion County Board member Hawker to Sands’ nominating petitions and remove Sands’ name from the 2026 primary ballot.
