DANVILLE — Despite efforts to try to keep the long-time business in the city — with an estimated more than 200 employees — Hyster-Yale Materials Handling on East Fairchild Street in Danville is closing.
“That’s shocking. That’s sad,” said Danville Alderman Mike Puhr on Wednesday.
The city rezoned property at West Newell Road and Bowman Avenue and have been taking other steps to keep the distributor here including working with the state. But in the end, it chose to move to Indiana.
Vermilion Advantage’s Interim CEO Tracy Wahlfeldt added that Vermilion Advantage is “heartbroken for the employees and everyone involved. This is not for lack of effort on the part of everyone involved. From the mayor’s office to the city to the developers, everyone did their absolute best.”
Danville Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. could not be reached for comment.
In a press release on Wednesday, Hyster-Yale announced plans to transition operations from its Parts Distribution Center in Danville to a larger, modern facility in Avon, Ind.
The new facility will become HYMH’s Customer and Parts Solutions Center, a hub designed to elevate customer engagement and service while modernizing the company’s North American aftersales and parts distribution operations, the release stated.
The new facility will allow for the consolidation of outsourced shipping and packaging operations, streamlined processes, enhanced operational efficiency and reduced supply chain complexity. As the Customer and Parts Solutions Center, it will also serve as a premier destination for customers, showcasing HYMH’s aftermarket parts, services and equipment in a working operation, hosting live demonstrations, and providing training and support, according to Hyster-Yale.
