ABOVE: A view of the Village Mall from the southern parking lot.
Over the holidays two major facts became known about the Village Mall. The first was that Dunham’s Sports would soon be closing. The second was that the interior portion of the mall and the southern lot would soon be once again be up for auction, during an online auction set for January 26th through 28th. Danville’s Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr says whatever happens next ownership wise, he’s hoping that a new owner will not just state plans, but do what has to be done to make them work. Williams says he knew what some of the things current owner, investor Jimmy Virk; seemed to have in mind.
AUDIO: They wanted to have an entertainment center. They wanted to have a movie theatre. And they’ve done nothing, including not even paying the taxes on the property. The City of Danville has offered them incentive agreements. I have seen; they have letters of intent; for a movie theater, and also a Five Below, and also a women’s clothing store. But they’ve been unable, they’ve been unwilling, to invest the money to bring those things actually to Danville.
Not included in the online auction, but in area outside the interior of the mall and owned by Virk; are Dunham’s Sports, Ross Dress for Less, Pet Supplies Plus, Slumberland Furniture, and Shoe Senation.
