THE FOLLOWING IS A VERMILION COUNTY RELEASE
Whereas, Vermilion County, Illinois was established two centuries ago, marking the beginning of a proud and enduring legacy rooted in perseverance, community, and progress; and
Whereas, since its founding, Vermilion County has played a vital role in the development of the State of Illinois through its rich agricultural heritage, industrious spirit, and contributions to commerce, education, and culture; and
Whereas, the County’s towns, villages, and rural communities have been shaped by generations of residents whose dedication, resilience, and civic engagement have
strengthened the social and economic fabric of the region; and Whereas, Vermilion County is distinguished by its natural beauty, including the Vermilion River, fertile farmland, rich coal and limestone deposits, and scenic landscapes that have supported both livelihoods and recreation for 200 years; and
Whereas, the County’s history reflects the broader story of Illinois- One of innovation, diversity, and determination – while honoring the traditions and values passed down through families, institutions, and local leadership; and
Whereas, the bicentennial of Vermilion County provides an opportunity not only to celebrate its past, but also to reflect on its present and reaffirm a shared commitment to a future of opportunity, unity, and responsible stewardship;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, that the 200th Anniversary of Vermilion County, Illinois is hereby recognized and celebrated, and that all residents are
encouraged to participate in commemorative events, educational activities, and reflections, through 2026, honoring the County’s history and those who have shaped it.
As our County motto states; Ye are the Salt of the Earth
