DANVILLE — Happy 200th birthday, Vermilion County!
As the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary this year, Vermilion County is only 50 years younger.
Sunday marks the special occasion, and kick-offs have already started for the yearlong celebration.
Sue Richter and Todd Lee, 200th Anniversary Celebration co-chairs, updated the Step Up community group Friday about upcoming events.
“We’re planning in the next year to tell the whole story, going out to communities, at their celebrations, their festivals, their fairs, having exhibits, presentations, and programs at our museum to tell our story,” Lee said.
He joked that longtime Sheriff Pat Hartshorn was not the county’s first sheriff 200 years ago.
Lee explained that the county began just west of Catlin in a little cabin, which was also the post office, called Butler’s Point. That was Vermilion County’s first county seat.
