THE FOLLOWING IS A CITY OF HOOPESTON RELEASE
The City of Hoopeston announces that a public warming center will be open at City Hall beginning 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, through 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, to provide residents a heated place to seek relief during a period of dangerously cold temperatures. The warming center will be located in the city council chambers and will remain open continuously throughout this time.
Residents should be advised that the warming center is not staffed in person and has very limited amenities. The space is intended to provide warmth and temporary shelter only. Visitors are encouraged to plan accordingly and bring any necessary personal items.
The City also reminds residents to follow these cold-weather safety tips:
• Dress in layers and cover exposed skin. Hats, gloves, and scarves can significantly reduce heat loss.
• Limit time outdoors. If you must be outside, take frequent warming breaks.
• Check on neighbors, especially seniors, people with disabilities, and those living alone.
• Use space heaters safely, keeping them at least three feet away from anything that can burn and never leaving them unattended.
• Protect pipes by allowing faucets to drip and opening cabinet doors to let warm air circulate.
• Bring pets indoors and ensure animals have warm, dry shelter.
For additional information or questions, residents may contact the City of Hoopeston at City Hall during regular business hours.
