A busy two days of showing students Danville High School elective class options began on Wednesday (Feb 11th), with 8th graders preparing to come to DHS next year all taking their turns to look around the high school gymnasium. Career and Tech Ed Department Chair Daniel Hile told CIMG that electives all the way from Science and the Performing Arts to his department’s specialty of teaching the skill trades were set to be on display for the 8th graders on Wednesday; and Danville High School freshmen, sophomores, and juniors on Thursday.
AUDIO: The 8th graders are seeing everything that’s offered, knowing that they have pathways to choose from, and step into as 9th graders. And then; the current 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders at DHS; will be able to look at all the programs that are available, and make steps toward taking those classes again next year.

Skilled Trades instructor Joe Wernert was on hand; to talk about welding, and more.
AUDIO: At this table we have Intro to Skilled Trades, which is a rotational class between welding, automotive, engineering, and wood shop. So they get to see some of the things that they’ll get to use in that one semester rotational course, and that’s sort of their pathway to any of the trades classes that we offer.

Also, DHS has had a resurgence in Home Ec classes over the last couple years; including a Child Development class, taught by Johnson Flanagan.
AUDIO: I’m trying to help these students understand ‘what does it take to actually exist in that world?’ More towards how do you actually get a career if you’re going to work with children? What does it look like?
The two day Elective Fair schedule at Danville High School also included a Wednesday evening open house for entire families, for both future and current DHS students.
