Members of a Vermilion County Board committee discussed Monday evening the possibility of hiring a company to review fees charged by the county. It has been 9 years since a similar study was done and the one being proposed would cost $15-thousand dollars.
County Recorder Matt Long noted state statutes require a fee study be done before his office could raise fees. The study would also cover such offices as the Vermilion County Clerk, Department of Animal Regulations, and Health Department. The County Board will decide later whether to proceed with the study.
Also, during Monday evening’s meeting, members of the County Board Finance and Personnel Committee heard an update on county finances. One area noted was a balance of over $231-thousand dollars in the Department of Animal Regulations. An agreement reached recently whereby the City of Danville pays more towards the county animal shelter has helped improve its finances. And County Board Chairman Steve Miller said agreements with other entities regarding the animal shelter are forthcoming.
County Treasurer Darren Duncan also reported on the outcome of the delinquent property tax auction which was handled by Vermilion Advantage in January. He said the sale netted $70-thousand dollars…which is down this year. Finance Committee chairman Jerry Hawker noted the county acts as trustee on behalf of taxing bodies for the auction. If nobody bids on a parcel that is in the auction, Duncan said someone can still buy it.
