In the race to replace the outgoing Pat Hartshorn as Vermilion County Sheriff, John Thompson has received a solid endorsement from county Republican voters. Combining County Clerk’s office and Danville Election Commission reported votes, Thompson defeated Mike Hartshorn 4,137 votes to 2,154 votes.
Thompson told CIMG that “We’re feeling very good right now. The voters came out, stated they wanted a change, and it went in our favor.”
Thompson will face Hugh Sands in November. Sands ran unopposed for the Democratic sheriff race nomination.

Darren Duncan
In the GOP treasurer’s race, incumbent Darren Duncan had an early lead, but challenger Jason Whaling made it very close down the stretch. When the county and city office totals were added up; Duncan had defeated Whaling 3,219 votes, to 2,917 votes. The Democrats did not have a treasurer candidate on the ballot.
Duncan told CIMG that the victory “Feels amazing. My nine years of public service and clean record as treasurer won the race.”
As for the State of Illinois, Darren Bailey has once again been chosen by state Republicans to face Governor J.B. Pritzker in November, after coming up short in 2022.
In the race to replace outgoing U.S. Senator Dick Durbin; Don Tracy has received the Republican nod, and Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton has received the Democratic nod; edging out U.S. Rep Raja Krishnamoorthi. U.S. Rep Robin Kelly came in third.
