Danville, Illinois — The city of Danville is celebrating a historic moment as two of its own have reached the pinnacle of collegiate cheerleading, earning a national championship at the NCAA College Cheerleading Nationals.
Zach Mittman, a Danville native and head coach at McKendree University, has led his team to a national title—marking a major milestone in both his coaching career and Danville’s athletic legacy. Mittman’s journey began at Danville High School, where he was a standout baseball player and a varsity co-ed cheerleader.

During his time cheering at Danville High School, Mittman was coached by Sharda Pascal and Steve Dale. He was also part of the groundbreaking team that became the first in school history to advance to IHSA Sectionals, setting a standard of excellence that continues to inspire.
Adding to this incredible achievement is Rudy Nicholas, another Danville native who played basketball at Danville High School before continuing his athletic and academic journey at Danville Area Community College as a co-ed cheerleader. He was also coached by Sharda Pascal And Abby Goble and David Xiong with assistance by Tatum Sharpf and Victoria Williams. Nicholas later transferred to McKendree University, where he reunited with Mittman and contributed to this championship victory.
Together, Mittman and Nicholas represent a full-circle moment for the Danville community, demonstrating the power of local talent, mentorship, and perseverance. Their accomplishment marks the first time individuals from Danville have achieved a national title at this level in collegiate cheerleading.
“This is more than a win, it’s a statement,” said community supporters. “Danville has always had the talent, and now the nation can see it.”
While this championship is a moment of pride and celebration, Mittman’s work is not done. He continues to lead other highly ranked teams competing later today, further showcasing his leadership and the strength of his program.
This historic victory stands as a testament to the dedication of these athletes and coaches, and serves as an inspiration to the next generation in Danville and beyond.
