Some members of Danville’s Neighborhood Associations got together over the weekend discussing plans for improving their areas. BILL PICKETT HAS MORE:
Danville Community Relations Administrator Rheanna Pierce says the groups set their own goals.
AUDIO: “It’s really what’s up to them”, said Pierce. “Like, I know the Maywood Neighborhood Association group has packed lunches for kids and homeless people. I know in Vermilion Heights, it’s neighborhood cleanups – including have a dumpster for people to clean out their houses. All of the associations do regular cleanups. One association does Santa pictures for Christmas.”
Danville Police Chief Christopher Yates was one of the city leaders who addressed the group at the Harrison Park Clubhouse. He says the neighborhood associations play a key role.
AUDIO: “We don’t know always exactly what is ailing somebody, or what’s a challenge in a different neighborhood”, said Yates. “And, whenever we have people we can talk to – not just a name, but a face – it helps build that relationship to where they feel comfortable coming to us, as well as, it opens up that line of communication to get that feedback.}
Chief Yates added being a good neighbor is particularly important this time of the year.
AUDIO: “And when someone goes on vacation, (and) when people know they’re on vacation, maybe they watch their house a little closer. If there’s something that doesn’t look right, maybe they check on them or call the police and say there’s something suspicious. Part of being a neighbor is you look out for each other, and you communicate when there’s a need,” added the Chief.
Danville Community Relations Administrator Rheanna Pierce was asked how many neighborhood associations are currently in the city.
AUDIO: “Roughly, we have about nine,” she replied. “Not all of them are super active, but we do have nine registered with us. We’re always looking to continue to grow. We’re always trying to invite new people.”}
In addition to Chief Yates and Pierce, those attending the forum also heard from Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr., Danville’s Public Works Director, the city comptroller, some aldermen, and Executive Director of Keep Vermilion County Beautiful.
