THE FOLLOWING IS A VERMILION COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT RELEASE
DANVILLE, IL – The Vermilion County Health Department, in partnership with Danville Area Community College (DACC) and Keep Vermilion County Beautiful (KVCB), will host a free electronics collection event from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 18. The event will take place in the north parking lot of DACC, 2000 East Main Street, Danville, and is open to all residents of Vermilion County.
This environmentally focused initiative encourages residents to responsibly dispose of broken, obsolete, or unwanted electronics. While the event is free of charge, donations to Keep Vermilion County Beautiful are appreciated to support future beautification efforts.
New for this year, residents can bring specific batteries to the collection for recycling. Single-use and rechargeable batteries (up to 11 lbs. and under 300 Watt-hours) can be accepted. The raised terminal of all batteries must be taped, including button and coin cell batteries. Do not cover the battery brand name or chemistry. The following batteries will not be accepted: damaged or defective batteries, batteries that are part of a recall, wet-cell batteries (car batteries), batteries weighing over 11 lbs. or over 300 Watt-hours. Call the health department for information on the disposal of damaged or defective batteries. Batteries can also be dropped off at the health department during regular business hours. Batteries that are not taped will not be accepted.
An update to the Consumer Electronics Recycling Act that went into effect Jan. 1, 2026, now allows for non-profits, schools, churches, local governments, and businesses to also participate in the collection program, provided they follow the program requirements of number of items accepted.
Participants may bring a maximum of seven televisions or computer monitors, in any combination, per household. Accepted items include:
- Televisions (CRT and flat screen)
- Monitors (CRT and flat screen)
- Computers and laptops
- Printers, scanners, and copiers
- Keyboards, mice, and computer peripherals
- DVD players, VCRs, gaming consoles
- Fax machines, cell phones, PDAs
- Satellite dishes, cable boxes
- Cameras, radios, clocks
- Fans, vacuum cleaners, and wiring
“We receive many calls about proper battery disposal, so we’re excited to offer county residents another convenient option to drop off batteries—either at our collection site or at the Health Department. Lowe’s will also continue accepting batteries for recycling,” said environmental health inspector Caitline Wolfe. “We’re also pleased that CERA has expanded its electronics recycling program beyond residents. It can be challenging for nonprofits, schools, churches, local governments, and small businesses to responsibly dispose of electronics when they only have a small quantity.”
Please note the following items will not be accepted: paint, motor oil, or large appliances. Residents are reminded that Illinois law prohibits the disposal of certain electronic products—including TVs, monitors, computers, and DVD players—in landfills.
