The Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office has confirmed with CIMG the arrest of a Tennessee man in connection with the I-74 accident near Prospect Avenue that killed former Tilton Police Chief Steven A. Cornett, 65.
The accident occurred at 3:30 AM Wednesday, May 27th; when Cornett, working on a road crew, was moving barriers in the closed lane.
The arrested party, Quamaine Fletcher, has told authorities he was going 65 in a construction zone that had a speed limit of 45. He has also told authorities that he had reached for his mounted cell phone that fell on floor, veered off the road, and overcorrected while steering back; when the accident occurred.
Cornett was pronounced deceased at the scene at 4:45 AM. Fletcher was due in court Thursday afternoon, and has been charged with one count of Reckless Homicide.
