The Following is a Statement from Vermilion County State’s Attorney, Jacqueline M. Lacy
As Vermilion County State’s Attorney, I have seen firsthand the devastating impact that violent offenders have on victims, families, and the good People of Vermilion County. National Gun Violence Awareness Day is an opportunity to remember victims and to stand with the families whose lives have been forever changed by tragic loss.
This is also a time to recognize the work of our law enforcement officers who confront violent offenders every day. Our law enforcement officers have taken a vow to serve and protect the citizens of Vermilion County. We will continue working alongside law enforcement to strengthen public safety. We remain steadfast in our commitment to hold violent offenders accountable and to protect our communities, as well as the rule of law.
In Vermilion County we have experienced an alarming number of armed violent crimes committed by repeat offenders who are prohibited from possessing firearms. We have seen far too many victims who have suffered life-altering injuries, and far too many families grieving the loss of loved ones due to senseless violence. Behind every case is a person whose life mattered and a family whose future was changed due to violent crime.
In the courtroom and throughout our community, we are reminded that every act of violence leaves behind real people whose lives are forever changed. I remain committed to ensuring that victims and their families are heard supported and treated with dignity, compassion, and respect throughout the criminal justice process.
As State’s Attorney, my focus is on protecting our community, supporting victims, and holding violent offenders accountable. I would ask all citizens of Vermilion County to please remember, if you see something, say something. Our county deserves justice.
