2026 Hoopla Reading Challenge: Join Hoopla’s year-long challenge! Each month, explore a new curated collection of books, audiobooks, and comics on Hoopla, then pick one (or more!) to enjoy. Summer Reading Challenge: Plant a Seed, Read! Grow your love of reading this summer and earn amazing prizes along the way! Earn 1 point for each day that you log your reading from June 1 – July 31 and watch your reading flourish. Save those points to “shop” for prizes in the library! June 22: Children’s Wonder Garden Club. Weekly gardening event for children and families. 9:30 -10:30 AM in the Howard Rutan Meeting Room. This program is made possible through a partnership with the University of Illinois Extension Office.
June 22: VCCDPlant a Seed, Read! Display and Presentation. During the week of June 15th visit the Children’s Department to explore a display of seeds and items from Forest Glen. Then, on Monday, June 22, join Naturalist Brenna to learn the importance of seeds and how they help us and our environment. She is full of interesting facts and is never boring. Stop in for tons of fun! Made possible by the Vermilion County Conservation District. 1:30 PM in the Children’s Department.
June 23: Teen Crafternoons. Tuesdays = your creative time. Hang out and make cool stuff. No sign-up, no stress. Just show up and create something awesome! This week: INKspirations – destress with mindful doodles and designs. While supplies last. 3:30 – 4:30 PM in the 2nd Floor Teen Space. Intended for ages 13 – 19.
June 23: Virtual Author Talk: Simple, Sustainable, and Powerfully Delicious Meals with Sana Javeri Kadri and Asha Loupy. Join us as we chat with Sana Javeri Kadri and Asha Loupy about The Diaspora Spice Co. Cookbook, which celebrates beautiful, simple, and seasonal cooking with 85 recipes adapted from India and Sri Lanka’s best family spice farms, on Tuesday, June 23rd at 1:00 PM via digital live-stream in partnership with Library Speakers Consortium. June 23: Wee Wigglers Story Time. Join us for action rhymes, stories, and songs for children ages 5 and under – Tuesdays at 10:00 AM in the Program Room.
June 24: Card Club. Join us the last Wednesday of the month to learn and play a variety of card games! Fun for all skill levels. No gambling, just games and good times. From Uno to Blackjack, Poker to Slapjack, there’s something for everyone. 5:00 – 6:00 PM in the Howard Rutan Meeting Room.
June 24: Free Summer Movie. Join us for Free Wednesday Movies at the Library, hosted by our Children’s Department every Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. in June and July! Families can enjoy a kid-friendly movie together, with free snacks and a drink available while supplies last. It’s the perfect way to cool off and relax this summer! 1:00 PM in the Howard Rutan Meeting Room.
June 24: Teen Writing Club. We’ve got writing prompts and games to spark your imagination and snacks* to fuel your mind! *While supplies last. Come write, chill, and connect with other teen writers. No pressure, just good vibes, cool ideas, and a space to be creative. Wednesdays, 3:30 – 4:30 PM in the 2nd Floor Teen Space.
June 25: Lit Fit with Mandy. Join us Thursdays starting in April for a dance fitness series that’s as fun as your favorite book. All fitness levels welcome. Bring your water bottle and wear clothes that can handle your best moves! 3:00 – 4:00 PM in the Program Room.
June 25: Mrs. Kate Carpenter’s Puppet & Music Show. Recording artist “Mrs. Kate” Carpenter will be sharing her original folk songs on at the Danville Public Library! All ages are welcome and admission is free. Come early to get a good seat. 10:00 AM in the Program Room.
June 25: Teen Party! Come hang out, eat snacks, and play games. 4:00 – 5:00 PM in the 2nd Floor Teen Space. Intended for ages 13 – 19.
June 26: Bob O’Connor – Author Visit. “Civil War Spirituality” Co-authored with his wife, Pam, the book examines how Southern and Northern preachers used the same Bible to convince their flock that slavery was good or evil. The book also looks into the spirituality of the leaders from both sides. 3:00 PM in the Howard Rutan Meeting Room.
June 27: Aaron Lawler – You Are A Story. Join Dr. Aaron Lawler in this workshop that examines how writing memoirs, telling our own stories, and recording our lives can help us search for those same answers. 2:00 PM in the Howard Rutan Meeting Room.
June 27: Crocheting for Beginners. Sign up online for the opportunity to learn a new skill and hobby. In two hours, we will cover the basic four steps of learning how to crochet. Materials have been generously provided by Robert Boyd State Farm Insurance. Sign up includes a free bag with yarn, crochet hook, and scissors, all to be used and taken home on class day. Crochet away! 1:00 – 3:00 PM in the Program Room. Ages 8-12
June 27: Story Time. Have a great time listening, interacting to stories and making a fun craft! Saturdays at 11:00 AM in the Children’s Department.
Adult/Teen Craft: Stop by the Reference Desk on the 2nd floor for a take & make craft! Starting June 1:Hot Air Balloon Magnets!While supplies last.
American Conversation Project. This civic season, we’re partnering with the American Conversation Project to record community conversations to be part of the National Public ACP Collection, marking the 250th Anniversary of the Nation. Everyone’s voice matters. Join a group of 4 – 6 fellow community members for one of seven conversations held between June 19 and July 4, 2026. Sign up here or call 217-477-5220, ext 116.
Beat the Summer Heat: Beginning June 1st, stop by the Children’s Department and make a bright, colorful summer visor. Choose a red, blue, yellow, pink, purple or orange visor and use stickers and markers to decorate your visor. One per child while quantities last.
Coloring Contest for all ages: Color a picture and win a prize. Return entries by the end of the month. Entries will be displayed in the Children’s Room. Winners will be notified.
