DANVILLE — Though the area isn’t under a heat advisory this week, those who work in or visit Vermilion County’s Joseph G. Cannon Building in downtown Danville can be forgiven for thinking otherwise.
The building’s 40-year-old cooling tower “quit working several weeks ago,” county board Steve Chair Miller said, and while the board approved an emergency resolution in April authorizing a $219,000 contract for a replacement, “we have misinformation about every day on that subject.”
He said without it, every floor in building can be about 10 degrees warmer.
“When it’s 80 degrees on the first floor, it’s 90 degrees on the second floor and 100 degrees on the third floor,” he said. “It’s just unbearable.”
As a result, for the second week, hours at the building at 201 N. Vermilion St. have been adjusted to 8 to 10 a.m.
