Dan Gable is famously known for saying, “Once you’ve wrestled, everything else in life is easy.”
However, the former Iowa State athlete, Olympic gold medalist, Iowa coach and Olympic coach said he’s decided to change the last word of that adage to “easier.”
“I used to say ‘easy,’” he told The News-Gazette. “But I found out that nothing’s really easy in life if you do it well.”
That includes filmmaking — something producer David Gould can attest to after spending nearly 30 years trying to make a biopic about Gable.
“We persevered, but to a degree, a miracle, the world opening up, whatever kind of terminology you want to use, there was something about this film, a piece of this film that we didn’t control,” he said. “We could work hard, we could persevere, we could keep trying to make it better. All those are important, and all those are ingredients in order to make a film and a good film. But there was just something that brought this together.”
Now, at long last, the film, “Gable,” is in post-production after being shot entirely in East Central Illinois, Gould said. Production wrapped Sept. 18.
