Danville Mass Transit and the CRIS Transportation program are facing a reduction in state funding because of lower census figures. And the State now wants only one of those entities to be the recipient of state grant money that would be used for both. But at Tuesday evening’s County Board meeting the board rejected a resolution authorizing submittal of paperwork that would allow Danville to be the recipient for those funds.
County Board Chairman Larry Baughn says both will have to make cuts because of the population decline. “It’s a sad situation for either entity,” said Baughn. He added, “We don’t set the formula for how cuts will be made.”
Danville Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. assured County Board members that CRIS and Danville Mass Transit will continue to operate. He noted DMT provides some service now beyond the city limits.
Among those who voiced concern about possible reductions in service at Tuesday’s County Board meeting was one woman from Rankin who was in a wheelchair. “They come and pick you up and take care of you’’ said Marsha Smith. She added, “They’re my lifeline.”
County Board member Jerry Hawker said the City of Danville will still run every aspect of their service. And CRIS will still provide their service. But he added there will still have to be cuts no matter where the fiscal officer is located who is responsible for the funds.
The County Board’s Executive Committee is expected to revisit the matter at its next meeting.
