THE FOLLOWING IS A VA ILLIANA HEALTH CARE RELEASE
DANVILLE, Ill. – VA Illiana Health Care System and multiple Veteran organizations have partnered to increase access to dignified American flag retirement services across central Illinois through an expanded network of American flag retirement boxes, with a new box in Danville officially opening on Flag Day, June 14, 2024.
The Danville box is the second to come online, joining the existing flag retirement box at Peoria’s Bob Michel VA Clinic. The network of six “Old Glory’s Rest” retirement boxes will continue to grow throughout the summer as boxes are phased in at VA Illiana’s six locations of care throughout central Illinois. In the coming weeks, VA clinics in Bloomington, Decatur, Mattoon, and Springfield will all be home to “Old Glory’s Rest” boxes. All members of the community are invited to bring their unserviceable American flags to the “Old Glory’s Rest” location in their community, from which the flags will be collected by area Veterans organizations and retired with dignity in accordance with the United States Flag Code.
“This is an exciting day for VA Illiana because it further affirms the power of partnering with the organizations across our state that both serve Veterans and inspire patriotism and respect for America’s symbols,” said Aaron Cain, acting chief of VA Illiana’s Center for Development and Civic Engagement. “When we show respect for the flag, we’re honoring the sacrifices of Veterans who have served to defend it.”
VA Illiana is proud to partner with American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, and numerous other Veterans organizations throughout central Illinois on the “Old Glory’s Rest” initiative. Organizations interested in partnering with VA Illiana to serve Veterans are invited to reach out to the health care system’s Center for Development and Civic Engagement at 217-554-4525.
