DANVILLE – Danville Area Community College (DACC) is excited to announce a comprehensive Mental Health Conference scheduled for September 26-27, 2024, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM each day. This event is helpful for nursing staff, therapists, and social workers, emphasizing the importance of self-care in providing quality care for others, but is appropriate for anyone who wishes to be better informed about maintaining good mental health in themselves and others. The conference fee is $20, which includes breakfast and lunch.
Sponsored by Danville Area Community College, Two Roads Wellness Clinic, and the DACC Foundation, the conference will feature keynote speakers and presenters Sarah Powell, Sarah Swims, and Brittney Enos from Two Roads Wellness Clinic, along with special guests Adi Puckett and Jen Slavik.
The conference kicks off on Thursday, September 26, with check-in and breakfast at 7:30 AM. The morning session includes a discussion on implicit bias and its management in practice. This is followed by Part 1 of a cultural competency session led by guest presenter Adi Puckett. After lunch and roundtable discussions, the afternoon continues with Part 2 of the cultural competency session, concluding with a presentation on Alzheimer’s dementia.
On Friday, September 27, the morning session focuses on unraveling symptoms of worry, stress, anxiety, and attention. This session continues with a segment on managing symptoms and relaxation techniques, featuring special guests Lisa (chair massage), Hunter (breathwork), and Hannah (yoga). Following lunch and roundtable discussions, the afternoon session covers integrative management of symptoms and concludes with a presentation by Jen Slavik on the microbiota-gut-brain axis and its impact on mental health.
Conference participants will gain a range of skills and knowledge, including identifying and mitigating implicit bias, understanding and responding to cultural differences, comprehending the impacts of Alzheimer’s dementia, managing symptoms of stress and anxiety, and understanding the correlation between gut health and mental health.
The presenters bring a wealth of expertise. Brittney Enos, LSW, is a mental health therapist with a background in sociology and anthropology from Monmouth College and an MSW from the University of Indianapolis. Sasha Powell, an Advanced Practice Nurse, holds an MS in Nursing from Indiana State University and certifications in holistic and integrative health care and nutritional genomics. Adi Puckett, with a background in health sciences and life coaching, brings alternative healing methods and coaching expertise. Sarah Swims, a mental health therapist, has an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of the Cumberlands. Jen Slavik, an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, is pursuing board certification through NBHWC and holds an MA in Mass Communication and a BA in Education.
