Back in the fall of 2019, Danville resident Mary Rothwell was on a medical mission trip in Uganda, Africa. She met a young man named Peter; who was so affected by his grandfather’s death that he wanted to do something about it, and become a doctor.
AUDIO: And, what is typical in third world countries; if you don’t have the money, then you don’t get treatment. And it really just kind of devastated Peter; in the fact that that was like the initiative, to make changes, and become the type of doctor that treats everyone.
Hence, the “Samuel Isaac Medical Partners” non-profit, named after Mary Rothwell’s son, was created; with Peter as the first student sponsored. The program provides scholarships to Ugandan young men and women to help them become doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals; and then serve in Uganda. They receive their education from a health institute or university in Uganda. Rothwell says one of the most wonderful things that ever happened was when Peter, who motivated her to start the effort, became a doctor and spent some time serving at the very hospital where his grandfather passed away.
AUDIO: After he graduated, he felt the need to go back, and serve at that hospital. So, he was able to do that for five months; and kind of make the changes that he wanted. Not long lasting, not yet; but that’s the goal.
