THE FOLLOWING IS A SHE SAID PROJECT RELEASE
The She Said Project – the team behind “That’s What She Said,” has launched an exciting program for local teen girls. The girls who are selected will spend 3 days immersed in interactive workshops and personalized coaching to develop, write, and ultimately perform their own personal story on the stage with the support and encouragement of their friends, family, and fellow teens.
Building empowerment through empathy: In today’s social climate it is more important than ever that young people, young girls especially, learn to speak up, share, and listen to each other’s stories to understand compassion and the importance of human connections.
“The success of That’s What She Said, – a live one-night performance of local women exchanging stories – has taught us that there is a real need for this type of empowering experience for all women and girls in this community,” says Jenette Jurczyk, National Director of The She Said Project and director of That’s What She Said, which played at The Fischer this past June.
That’s What Teens Say has been running in Champaign-Urbana since 2018 in partnership with the Champaign Park District. The program can also be found in Bloomington-Normal and Peoria. To date, more than 175 teen girls have been empowered to share their stories on the That’s What Teens Say stage.
This program is being made possible by the generous support of the Vermilion County Mental Health Board, DACC and The Fischer Theatre.
The weekend event will take place October 4-6. On Friday and Saturday the program will run at DACC. The weekend program will culminate in a final performance on Sunday, October 6th at 3 PM for friends, family, and anyone from the community to come and cheer these girls on. The final performance is Sunday, October 6th at 3 pm at The Fischer Theatre. Tickets are (a suggested donation of) $5.00 at the door.
Nominations and Applications are now open thru September 20th. Teen girls ages 13 – 18 are encouraged to apply. Parents, guardians, teachers, counselors, and mentors are encouraged to nominate a teen for the program. The cost of the weekend program is $175, which includes meals and materials for the weekend. Thanks to our generous supporters, scholarships are available for participants by request.
That’s What Teens Say also returns to Champaign-Urbana the weekend of November 1-3, 2024.
