Some leaders of the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois will be speaking at a town hall meeting in Danville on Monday, October 7th. A public discussion on civil liberties and civil rights will begin at six o’clock that evening at the Laura Lee Fellowship House, located at 212 East Williams Street in Danville.
The ACLU says issues at stake in the upcoming election will be explored along with a discussion of what the ACLU says has been ‘persistent, historic disparities in traffic stops for Black drivers in Danville. The ACLU says data reported to the Illinois Department of Transportation by Danville Police showed that during 2023, Black motorists in Danville were nearly five times more likely to be stopped by police for a routine traffic stop.
“For a long time, Black residents of Danville have felt targeted by the police in traffic stops” said Lloyd Randle, a local activist who previously served on the Danville City Council. Randle says in light of data demonstrating the reality of disparity in traffic stops, he and many other Danville residents are looking forward to the discussion with the ACLU leaders on how to address the concerns.
The public is invited to attend the meeting. Again, it begins at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, October 7th, at the Laura Lee Fellowship House in Danville.
