A proposal to have the Danville Municipal Building operate on a four-day work week is headed to the Danville City Council for consideration. But it is going to the Council without a recommendation from the Public Works Committee of the City Council.
Alderman Ed Butler voted in favor of the proposal during a committee meeting last night (Tuesday), along with Alderman Mike Puhr. Four other members of the committee voted against the idea. Butler said he was voting “yes” because the change to having city hall open only four days could always be changed back later.
Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr. told the committee he would like to get the issue settled. He noted citizens sometimes get upset when they discover the doors at the municipal building are locked from noon until 1:00 p.m. as employees go to lunch.
Mayor Williams said discussions with the city union resulted with two options: One is to continue keeping the building open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with city hall closed from noon until 1:00 p.m., or switch to having the building open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The building would be closed from noon until 12:30 p.m. for lunch.
The Public Works building on East Voorhees Street would continue to be open on Fridays.
The City Council is expected to vote at its next meeting on whether to change hours at the municipal building.
