An investigation continues into a tragic Friday afternoon crash in Champaign County which killed an Illinois State Police Trooper. Champaign County Coroner Steve Thuney says Trooper Corey S. Thompsen was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital at 4:32 p.m. Friday (October 18, 2024). He was 28-years-old and had served almost five years with Illinois State Police.
Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly announced the line-of-duty death. “The ISP family mourns Trooper Thompsen and holds his family and loved ones in our hearts during this terrible time,’’ said Director Kelly. He added, “We ask the public to give Trooper Thompsen’s family, and his ISP family, time while we grieve and work through this tragedy.”
Coroner Thuney said Trooper Thompsen sustained injuries in a motor vehicle collision earlier Friday near the intersection of Leverett Road and Martin Road in rural Champaign County. He said details of the collision are still under investigation. Coroner Thuney added an autopsy will be performed next week, and an inquest may occur at a later date.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Trooper Thompsen and the Illinois State Police family while they work through this tragedy,’’ added the Champaign County Coroner.
The death of Trooper Thompsen is being investigated by the Champaign County Coroner’s Office, Champaign County Sheriff’s Police and Illinois State Police.
