The Danville City Council Public Works Committee has approved some changes to the ordinance approved earlier this year that adjusted the Rental Housing Registration portion of the Danville City Code. Two major points mentioned during Tuesday (November 12th) evening’s committee meeting were more clarity on the forms about inspections of the rental properties; along with lowering the fines a bit so that landlords will be more likely to pay them, and not completely ignore the city and not be on the city’s records.
Danville’s Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr says the idea is to make things fair for both tenants and landlords, and to put the city in position for stronger oversight.
AUDIO: We want to make sure that our people have good quality housing to live in. And that our landlords are providing that good quality housing, so they get good tenants who take care of their properties. And essentially, if we don’t have people enrolled in the program, then we can’t verify their living conditions. The biggest thing is we want to be able to get people registered, so that we can protect both our landlords and our citizens, and make sure that everyone is getting quality living and quality tenants.
The proposed changes will come before the full Danville City Council at their November 19th meeting.
