DANVILLE — A 6-year-old Danville boy who had recently attended fire-prevention activities at Danville Fire Department was credited with alerting his grandmother to fire in her home and limiting its damage.
Mason McGuire, who also lived at the home in the 1600 block of North Franklin Street, noticed smoke in the residence and alerted his grandmother, Priscilla Bradberry. He told her to exit the house and call 911.
Firefighters were alerted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
The 6-year-old then directed Bradberry to a vehicle outside the home to stay warm.
Firefighters found a light haze of smoke in the house when they arrived.
They investigated and found a pile of burning blankets that had been set too close to a water heater in the basement.
The items were extinguished with minimal damage to the residence.
Mason’s mother, Gina McGuire, told Fire Chief Aaron Marcott that Mason had attended fire-prevention activities at Danville Fire Department through Northeast School.
Gina McGuire said she felt it was that recent education that informed the boy to act as he did.
Marcott said Mason’s actions likely limited the damage caused to the home.
Mason will be formally recognized for his actions at a later date.
