The museum was getting ready for its Holiday Open House on Saturday, December 14th at 116 North Gilbert in Danville. Some other JROTC students from Danville High School have been helping at the Vermilion County War Museum and the high school.
Some people may think JROTC is designed to interest students into later joining the military but Stack says that’s not the case…
{AUDIO: “They are not here to recruit you into the military. They’re here to just teach you. The purpose of JROTC is to help young citizens become better versions of themselves and better citizens.”}
Fifteen-year-old Fermin Grajales says students have been learning how to become more responsible…
{AUDIO: “The main goal of JROTC is to become better citizens and encourage the youth to all just be better for our society.”}
Vermilion County Museum Director Sue Richter says students from Danville High School’s JROTC program have helped on several occasions….
{AUDIO: “Today they’re helping us sort sports cards so that we can get them in the proper categories – baseball, football – this type thing. And then they also have helped us decorate for next weekend’s Open House, and they are actually going to come back and help us with the children’s activities next weekend during the open house.”}
“It’s nice to know young people are willing to volunteer,’’ added Richter, “because in today’s world we need a lot of volunteers.”
The Holiday Open House at the Vermilion County Museum runs from 1:30 until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2024. Both buildings –(the Museum Center and Fithian Home) – will be open. The free event includes Christmas caroling, children’s games and crafts, Santa, and horse drawn carriage rides. The Holiday Open House is sponsored by Farmers Bank and Trust in Oakwood and Hoopeston.
In addition to Stack and Grajales, other students helping on Saturday included Maleiki Starke, 15, Sophia Sporleck, 14, and Kenneth Baker, 14. All are freshmen at Danville High School.
