THE FOLLOWING IS A BILL PICKETT STORY
A bill to better compensate teachers in high-need areas has passed the Indiana Senate. It is sponsored by State Senator Spencer Deery of West Lafayette.
State law currently allows Indiana schools to offer teachers supplemental pay along with their base salary under the district’s negotiated salary schedule. However, the payments are rarely utilized.
Senate Bill 249 would change this by allowing schools to fund supplemental checks before collective bargaining. Additionally, the bill requires at least 10-percent of routine teacher raises are based on the academic needs of students,
The Senate passed the measure 39-10 sending it to the Indiana House of Representatives for consideration.
