A bill that would allow emergency responders to transport patients to more options than an emergency room has passed the Indiana Senate. The Bill was authored by State Senator Spencer Deery of West Lafayette.
The bill would allow an ambulance crew, with safety protocols in place, to take a patient to a mental health facility or an urgent care facility that can provide appropriate treatment.
“For some patients, the emergency room is neither the most affordable nor the most appropriate place for an ambulance to take them,’’ said Senator Deery in a news release. “This bill could save the state money and provide better care for patients, especially those undergoing a mental health crisis.’’
The bill advances to the Indiana House of Representatives for further consideration. The Senate approved the proposal unanimously.
